How to install wood floor transition strips.
Apply a 1 4 inch bead of flooring or construction adhesive along the center of the expansion joint.
Mark the floor where the transition strip is to be located taking care to allow for any required expansion space as specified by the flooring manufacturer.
Place the transition strip in the expansion joint and press down firmly.
Bond the shim to the subfloor and then bond the molding to shim.
Position a scrap piece of the transition strip you re using on the floor next to each of the stops and cut out the bottoms of the stops flush with the top of the strip using a handsaw.
Cut a wood shim to fill the gap between the bottom of the molding and the subfloor.
In some cases weight may have to be applied to the molding to keep it in contact with the adhesive until it cures.
These can finish off the edge of a floor and make the job look much more professional.
Installing transition strips is an often overlooked part of the installation of hard surface flooring.
If you are installing laminate or hardwood you will most likely need to put some transition strips down at some point.
